Here is my interview with Cagatay Oezbay who is the Founder & CEO of COEZBAY UG. COEZBAY UG is located in Munich, Germany where they provide three main services:
- Professional Aerial photography
- Virtual 360-degree Tours
- 3D Visualization and 3D-Printing
Cagatay & I recently spoke via email about his company, his passion for technology & where he sees the mixed reality industry headed:
Q: What type of business/organization can best benefit from your services?
A: Almost every business or organization can benefit from our services. We are building software & hardware solutions for the rapidly emerging mass medium of Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality and serious games for all kind of platforms. We are providing a set of tools like virtual reality applications in which you can present your industrial machines as well as your services in 360-Degree real movies or Full CG applications and animations. We are also providing the conventional way of advertising methods like commercials, image movies, 3d animations, professional drone flights or 3D scanning as well as photogrammetry tasks on a large scale. In the same time, we are combining a lot of our tasks with the upcoming efforts in R&D when it’s about artificial intelligence.
Q: In what region(s) of the world do you provide your services?
A: Wherever you need our services. There is no regional bond.
Q: Do you have a presence in the USA already or plans to expand into any markets here?
A: No physical presence yet but I have been there and a couple of contacts. Time will show what the market will offer.
Q: How do you approach solving customer issues? Do you have a specific, known method you use?
A: Usually we are good listeners when it’s about issues. One of our goals is to replace our customers' problems with effective methods that increase their productivity as well as their public image.
Q: Can you cite an example or 2 of how your services can help specific industries like manufacturing or civil authorities, etc.?
A: Absolutely. Among other things, we create augmented reality and virtual reality applications using technologies such as laser scanning and photogrammetric images. For example, we can show certain realities of a landscape with interaction possibilities for the viewer in real-time. It is also possible to train emergency services under real conditions in Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality. Whether it is about the operation or maintenance of machines or about the presentation of it. There are no limits in VR.
Q: What do you want your company to become long term: industry leader, a source of ideas for others, a big time money maker, etc.?
A: We strive for a professional and sustainable business relationship in all of our projects. This means we are acting as a source of ideas for others and we are checking and helping our customers to realize their plannings. We are convinced that our products, especially in the Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality field and our general approach will definitely provide more income for our customers as well as for us.
Q: Where do you find your passion comes from: a certain author, belief system, nature, etc.?
A: We all have something that makes us feel alive, a passionate pursuit that adds a little extra meaning to our life's, an activity that gives us a sense of fulfillment, of purpose. My passion is to watching my network and the businesses of my partners as well as mine grow. To cut a long story short I’m chasing for my passion and I would rather die of passion than of boredom. And of course because I love sporty and fast cars 😉
Q: Do you have any influential mentors to follow on social media or good books to read?
A: Guess it’s Elon Musk. He’s realizing most of my dreams of my childhood these days. Man can not read enough. But a good one I could prefer is "The Art of War - By Sun Tzu".
Q: Is there any specialized training you would suggest to someone who wants to work in your field?
A: My suggestion and the most expensive way to do it would be: Learning-By-Doing.
Q: What level of math/science/art is required to succeed?
A: Good knowledge in math is always a benefit, a good general knowledge of science is never bad and of course you should understand the general rules in art (if there are some).
Q: What type of topics/web sites/books do you invest in to stay up to date with your industry?
A: I am in permanent contact with programmers, artists and scientists from different fields. Most of the time I am reading the blogs, websites and social streams of my direct contacts. And of course regular tables in which we’re discussing about the new possibilities.
Q: If you had to do something else for a living what would you do?
A: I am already doing what I want. Why should I change this?
Q: Do you partner with any local charities or work with schools to educate people about the opportunities in your industry?
A: I am currently involved in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and ACM Siggraph. For this there is a Munich Chapter as well. And company wise I’ve set up a upcoming Research and Development project in cooperation with the FZI/KIT (Forschungszentrum Informatik Karlsruhe) and a couple of companies around Munich.
Q: Where do you see your industry going in the next 5, 10, 20+ years? Where do you fit into that future?
A: The industry I am in is very changeable. I am pretty sure that I will write a book to answer this question soon.
Q: Is there anything else you want to express for a local/global audience that isn't explained on your website?
A: We are convinced that technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality will have a significant impact on the future. Many of the things we do, cannot be described or explained. Therefore, it is always good to visit our offices (EDIT: or arrange skype calls and set up virtual meetings) to get an idea of the new possibilities.
VR as well as AR are technologies which could fundamentally change the whole industry. Not only in the entertainment industry. It could also be applied to other applications. The buzzword Serious gaming indicates applications like simulations for the industry, healthcare, narrative learning games, role-playing games or research and development applications. Technologies such as photogrammetry and laser scanning will also become more and more relevant. New scanning technologies, will result in significant time savings and, above all, realistic and true-to-scale content. I am sure that it will find their way into the areas of different industries. The completely different new and immersive way to work within virtual environments opens up new ways to shape and develop the new era of computing. I am also convinced that topics like Artificial Intelligence, deep learning and Quantum Computing going to be a big part of the AR and VR development in the future.
